Ethics in Visual Journalism

marcus-halevi1A photographer sometimes faces a tough dilemma when he is working. What can be shown - and is there some issues that he can’t photograph? Infographic artists face the same dilemma when doing violent infographics.

It’s an ongoing discussion - a discussion we must never stop.

There are differences though - a photographer has the added dilemma that his actions at the scene might or might not interfere with the news. Perhaps he can help someone if he stops shooting and comes to aid? Or perhaps his role as a documenter is so important that he shouldn’t interfere with the situation and interfere with the pristine news?

Look at this video - it lasts for two minutes and asks the important question quite efficiently.

  1. Hi Doreen
If you’re writing a school paper, I see no problem for you in using the article. What do you think? Should a photographer show this kind of pictures?

  2. Hi there… I’m wondering if I can use this article/video in a school paper I am writing on ethics?
    Thank you!

  3. Wow. In all the tragedy, its a beautiful clip. I have no problems with the photographers approach to his work. He saw there were help on the way, and I dont think he could have saved her anyway. If he had been alone and only thought about taking pictures its another story…
